from the SSHBEA Political Action Committee

In previous issues this year your PAC committee has tried to make you aware of the many ways the Animal Activist affect us in our daily lives.

We have been told that we all should be vegetarians, that we should ban circuses, do away with rodeos, horse racing, zoos, carriage rides in the park, and anything that uses any type of animal for fund raising. Also on the activists’ list of something we should not do is wear leather or fur of any kind. We are not to use animals in medical research and should not take any medicines containing animal by-products.

After all of the above, we should be licensed as caretakers of animals rather than having ownership.

These activist groups have become active in our schools, churches, and our universities across the country. They are most convincing in as much as they use our role models to sell their beliefs and strategies to the public.

We as individuals must recognize that these groups use our government and its legislature to introduce legislation, which becomes the laws we all have to live by.

The question we must ask ourselves is at what point in time are we willing to let animals have more rights than HUMANS, and why should we let this happen. LOOKS LIKE WE ARE THE TARGET........

THESE ARE JUST A FEW OF THE ALERTS FROM A MAJOR NATIONAL ACTIVIST GROUP

bulletHelp Stop the Slaughter of Pigs at Virginia Museum

The Frontier Culture Museum in Staunton, Va. is planning to reenact early 19th century animal slaughter by killing one or two pigs behind closed doors and then "processing and preparing" the flesh in front of visitors on November 24 & 25. The museum claims that this will somehow educate visitors about the source of their meat.

bulletDetroit Residents: Support Ban on Animals

After bringing much attention to the plight of animals who are forced to perform in circuses, the activists in Detroit have the Detroit Zoo director to support a ban on the use of animals in circuses.

bulletIams Takes Aim an Wildlife

bulletHelp Make New Jersey the First State to Prohibit Cruel Factory Farming Practices

The New Jersey Department of Agriculture is in the process of developing standards of the "humane raising, keeping, care, treatment, marketing, and sale of domestic livestock." This is an unprecedented opportunity to improve conditions for farm animals in the U.S., and it is extremely important that you let the N.J. Secretary of Agriculture know the new standards should address egregious cruelty occurring on farms across the state.

bulletStop Beaver Kill in Fairfax, Va.

Despite the available humane alternatives and and overwhelming public opposition, authorities in Fairfax County, Va. have declined offers of assistance from several animal protection organizations and intend to move forward with previous plans to exterminate a colony beavers who have constructed a dam in a stormwater drain near Tysons Corner.

bulletAsk Rosie O’Donnell to End Her Promotion of Cruelty to Animals

Recently, on The Rosie O’Donnell Show, Rosie has been heavily promoting leather and has even held "Wear Leather Days ". On one such day, Rosie confused and horrified members when she claimed, absolutely incorrectly that she was supporting "PETA- approved leather." Please write to Rosie and asker her to tell the animals’ side of the story.

bulletThe fate of Rates, Mice, and Birds is in Clinton’s Hands

Last week, the U. S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) agreed to modify its definition of the word "animal" so that rats, mice, and birds would finally be covered under the Animal Welfare Act. This would affect the more than 20 million rats, mice, and birds who comprise 95 percent of all the animals used in labs each year. However, the biomedical industry has succeeded in blocking this action by getting an amendment attached to the FY2001 Agriculture Appropriations bill.

bulletCuriosity is Killing Cats

The National Institution Drug Abuse (NIDA), has awarded researcher at Ohio State University (OSU) $1.68 million to infect 120 cats with the feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) and force them to "binge" on methamphetamine. Apparently, researchers conducting the five year study hope to create and animal "model" that can be used to study how methamphetamine use intensifies disease progression in people who are not only infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) but are addicted to methamphetamine as well.

bulletAnimal Rights for Dummies

IDG Books publishes a series of books "for Dummies", such as Gardening for Dummies. Please write a letter to IDG Books and ask that the company publish an Animal Rights for Dummies. This would be an excellent resource for all animal rights activists, especially people getting started in the animal rights movement.

While this committee is strongly against cruelty to animals, we’re also strongly for our rights as humans! The above examples of Action Alerts are listed only to provide you the reader with samples of how activists spend their time and efforts - and your money when you send it to them. Many research projects the activists are trying to stop are those that ultimately result in progressive medical cures, etc. A group that’s against killing rodents certainly is the same group that’s against you riding your favorite horse - for any reason!
