Minutes of the October 13, 2008 SSHBEA Board of Directors Meeting

On October 13, 2008 , Mack Motes called the SSHBEA Board of Directors meeting to order and asked Janice Higgins to call the roll.  Those absent were Sis Osborne, Cindy Haley, Ronnie Sapp, Maude Hopkins, Gordon Hirschi and Don Woodson who had all notified the office of their absence and Jennifer Broadhurst who did not notify the office.  Janice then read the minutes of the last meeting and Kim McMahan made the motion to approve them as read, Freda Bullard seconded, motion passed.

Mack had asked Linda (his daughter) to attend the meeting in Nashville with the USDA during the 1st week of October.  Some of the members at the meeting want anyone on suspension to not be allowed on the grounds of a show.  Mack said if it was a suspension for a sore horse we might consider it?  If we could make a trade on something.  The commission has dropped the ball on the “follow the horse scar rule”.  1st offense is 2 weeks – if you led up 5 different horses and get a ticket for scar rule on each horse it would be 2 weeks for each one, but still only 1 offense.  All those horses would also go on a 2 weeks suspension.  If any one of those 5 horses gets another scar rule ticket that would be the trainers (whoever) 2nd ticket.  There is one year probation on all of this.  The commission has never put the horse on suspension like the rider/trainer is.  Some want to through the above rule thrown out.  If the above is thrown out the tickets on the 5 horses would be 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc offenses and the trainer would be out of business.  Another group wants to get rid of the DQP program and hire vets to check horses at shows.  The commission has got a task force together and they are trying to save the DQP program.

Mack has a request from NSSHA to meet with some of their board and try to arrange show dates opposite each other instead of the same dates.  Dickie Gardner made the motion to have this meeting, Aaron Crafton seconded, motion passed.  Mack appointed Dickie Gardner and Linda Bedwell to meet with them on this issue.

Mack informed the board that Sis Osborne’s mother had passed away.

Aaron Crafton gave the financial report.  He said it had been a lean month but not as bad as last year.  He has not had a chance to look at all the fall show.

Roy Franklin reported that he was hired to judge a performance show in Woodbury this year.  Earlier in the day Sport Horse had an event and his family wanted to participate and due to a rule in the rule book about a judge not being allowed on the grounds until 30 minutes before a show he could not attend the sport horse event.  He had a problem with that in that he thinks they are 2 totally different things and he wanted to know the thoughts of the board.  Mack appointed Michelle Bailey, Kim McMahan and Dickie Gardner to look into changing/rewording this rule and come back with a recommendation at the next board meeting.

Benny Lance reported CCWHA is having a Halloween ride on October 25 at 11:00AM .

Roy Franklin thinks that the belt buckles were over sold for the fall show due to the fact that there were being announced with co sponsor at the end of the show.

Mack reported he had decided to run for President again and asked that the people going off the board to consider running again also.  He considers our registry, the building and our property to be the most important issue.

Janice Higgins reminded the board that the Sport Horse Championship is November 7 & 8.  And there is a judge’s clinic November 15.

We had a registration problem – the original registration listed the foal date of 1998 and was registered under the hardship rule without background.  New information showed the horse was born in 1999 instead.  The new owner now wants to update her papers with the background to match the walking horse papers.  After discussion Janice Higgins made the motion to update the papers, Roy Franklin seconded, motion passed.

The 2009 Equine Affair was discussed and tabled until the next meeting.  We need to pay ½ of the fee by December to reserve our space.  The total fee is about $2500.

A Board Of Directors pot luck had been discussed earlier in the year and a date discussed, but no one could remember when it was – Jennifer Broadhurst was working on this and is not present at this meeting.

Trophies & certificates had been bought to be presented to the trainer and amateur with the most entries at the fall show.  It was thought that Jennifer Broadhurst was supposed to tally the entries for these 2 presentations, but it has not been done.  People have been asking about these awards.

Bob Wright complimented Aaron on the cookout at the fall show – a job well done.

Freda Bullard made the motion to adjourn, Michelle Bailey seconded, motion passed.
